The allocation is made by the index providers MSCI and S&P Dow Jones on the basis of a company's main business segment. The decisive factor is the segment from which the company generates the majority of its sales or operating profit. The GICS "Materials" sector comprises companies that are active in the production, processing or refinement of raw materials.
